For years, this 43,000-square-foot, four-story structure formerly known as the Antiques Minnesota Building, sat vacant on Lake Street. Improving the property became a priority for neighborhood groups, residents and the area business association.
In 2003, Neighborhood Development Center, Latino Economic Development Center, and In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre partnered together to renovate the current Plaza Verde building. The three partners envisioned a revitalized retail destination for community-based businesses and a center for arts groups—a perfect blend of neighborhood and community assets and needs.
In 2005, the building was completely renovated, dedicated by the first Mexican Consul in Minnesota and renamed “Plaza Verde Benito Juarez” . It continues to provide high quality retail, office, and non-profit arts space.
